Getting Organized- 7 Ways to Actually Do It
Organization is key to success, yet no matter how many times it ends up in your New Year’s Resolutions, it can still be a struggle. This article is meant to aid in reaching your organizational goals. Before we begin, it’s important to remember the role of mindfulness. “Mindfulness is the basic human ability to be fully present, aware of where we are and what we are doing, and not overly reactive or overwhelmed by what’s going on around us.” –Mindful Staff Being organized can sometimes create anxiety and worry because it seems like an impossible task. However, when you are mindful, you recognize what the main issue or task that needs to be accomplished. With that said, here are seven tips to help you become more organized.
1. Decide What Organization is to You: In order to understand organizations role in your day to day life, you have to decide what that looks like for you. It’s best to start with something that bothers you, maybe you’re sick of the clutter in your inbox at work and need a file system to be organized. Maybe you are a stay at home parent and need an organization process that is simple enough for your small child to be able to do. Whatever the case is, deciding what organization looks like for you and your needs is the best way to start.
2. Devote Time: Benjamin Franklin said, “For every minute spent organizing, an hour is earned.” Even if you
only have 5 minutes to dedicate to being organized, it’s worth every effort. When you dedicate that time, you are practicing mindfulness and dedication to your goal of being organized.
3. Write Things Down: When you get into the habit of writing thing down, you are making the effort to remember important tasks or information that needs to be done or remembered. This practice allows you to not only be more productive, it allows you to remember things even better.
4. Make Lists: When your mental capacity is at its max, it’s hard to stay focused and motivated. Lists help to
relieve the buildup in your mind and gives you a visual of tasks that need to be accomplished. This can be as simple as opening a new note on your phone or sketching it out on a pad of paper.
5. Plan/Schedule Things: Whether you are a business professional, a stay at home parent, a college student, or a retired grandparent, scheduling and planning can never lead you wrong. It mixes your habit of writing things down and devoting your time. When you can write tasks or goals into a calendar it gives you a deadline and reminds you of when things need to be done. It keeps your daily activities rolling smoothly and allows you to see your upcoming commitments.
6. Clean as You Go: One of the keys to keeping organized and less anxious is to keep your work space clean. If you are making dinner, practice cleaning as you go so that by the time the meal is done there is minimal cleaning left, creating a peaceful and happy environment. If you have a big presentation to do at work, try putting papers away when you’re done with them, or closing out tabs on your internet browser. The less clutter, the better.
